A SHORT HISTORY OF THE RIVIVALISTS MOVEMENT IN ISLAM

This is the translation of Mawlana Mawdudi’s Urdu work Tajdid-o-I&yä-i-Din. This great work was originally published as far back as 1940 and has since run through countless editions in various languages. It aims at reviving a new feeling among the Muslims for religious reconstruction. The author presents in a brief but telling way the history of the revivalist movement in Islam from a critical angle. Those people who were hit for their hero-worship and felt offended on account of their vague and exaggerated notions about tajdid and especially about Imam Mahdi raised cries of protests against the author. Some such typical objections and misgivings have been dealt with in the appendices, which offer a wealth of knowledge on, and afford a rare insight into, subjects like taywwuf, revelation and Imam Mahdi. Mawlana Mawdudi is perhaps the 21st century’s most well-known Muslim scholar from the Indian sub-continent. His writings in Urdu are translated into numerous languages all over the world. He founded the Jama’at-e-lslami and was active in political and social works. He suffered imprisonment and was even sentenced to death by the Pakistan regime in 1953. His writings had created controversies and sparked criticisms from ‘ulamä’ of that time, but have become an inspiration to millions of Muslims today and required readings in institutions of higher learning. His magnum opus, Tarjuman al-Qur’än, an exegesis of the holy book, was completed shortly before he died in 1979. His works established his place in the annals of Islamic revivalist thought.
