OUR DECLINE ITS CAUSES AND REMEDIES

Muslim leadership had become selfish and unjust with a deep-rooted tendency to exploit and use people under their rule. Degenerated ‘Illamä’, withqselfish aims of protecting their own lives, instead*öf .correcting the errors and injustices of their heads,aildkings, sanctioned the cruelties of despotic rulerg•q.nq€meditated the viola- tion of religious name of religion itself. Two other groups who helped to furthe€.disgrace Islam and Muslims causing their decline, were the ‘ultra-moderns’ and ‘conserva- tives’ of the Muslim society. The former believed that the progress of the west lay in their scant regard for religion; the latter, with fatalistic attitudes resisted every change. Shakib’s answers were specific for his time but today, 70 years later it is still relevant. The Islamic character as it exists today has changed relatively little since Shakib’s time. It still awaits redemption at all levels, ruler and ruled, young and old.
