SAYYID QUTBS

SAYYID QUTB is a Muslim scholar whose writings are seen by certain circle as the mouthpiece of political and hard-line Islam. His Qur’anic commentary, Fi Zilcil al-Chtr’do, enjoyed a wide spectrum of readership in most parts of the Muslim world especially among the youths. it could be regarded as one of the most popular books of faith- in the twentieth century and has become a favourite among those obsessed with the establishment of an Islamic order. In the field of tufsir. Qutb is seen as the founder of the school of exegetical orientation (madrasah al-harakkvah). One of the distinctive movement aspects of his exegesis is related to the literary style which surpasses of mufassir. Before he became an ideologue of Islam, he had secular notions and never believed in the cemprehensiveness of the message of Islam with the overall practice of the Sluiri ‘alt. His interest to study the Qur’an was simply due to the fascination and beauty of language. which he found incomparable with any Arab literary works. In the eve of independence, Qutb vehemently critized Egyptian rulers who collaborated with colonial rulers. lie was also involved in the physical struggle to promote the supremacy of Islam. Currently. his writings arc a point resource for researches both Muslims and non-Muslims with different views about him. This book discusses his life and scholarly works, socio-political and Islamic thought in Egypt, concept of jdhilivvah (lit. ignorant), ‘acjidah (bed rock of Muslim monotheistic belief), ayat al-jildid (Islamic struggle), concept of governance (Itirkiminah), and exegetical views on Jews and Christians (People of the Book).
Sohirin Mohammad Solihin received his Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham. He worked at the Islamic Foundation, Leicester, United Kingdom from 1986-1993 at its special unit on Christian-Muslim Relation. He also served as research associate at Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, St. Cross College, Oxford University, from 1994-1995. lie has been involved in a number of seminars and conferences on Islamic thought: contemporary issues of the Muslim Ummah and inter-religious dialogue, both at national and international levels. He has written books entitled Copt and Muslim in Egypt: Study on Harmony and Hostility, published by the Islamic Foundation, 1991, Islam and Politics: Emergence of Reformative Movement in Indonesia, IIUM Research Centre, 2003, Islamic Da ‘wah: Theory and Practice, IIUM Press, 2007, Emergence and Development of Liberal Islam in Indonesia: Critical Evaluation, and Sayyid Qutbs F7 Zihil al-Qur’an: Study on Selected Theme, which is currently in your hand.
