THE LAW AND INSTITUTION OF ZAKAT

Zakat is more than a personal ‘ibädah; it is also a social institution.It is neither ordinary charity nor voluntary alms giving. It is a right the poor can enforre on the rich. As such, the institution of Zakät has been playing a pivotal role in Islam’s social welfare scheme, relieving naked poverty among the Muslim Ummah and keeping its sanity inspite of its plesent decadence. In this work, the author carefully and comprehensively examines the rules of Zakät from the most authentic sources, viz., the Qur’an, the reliable Hadith and classical works of fuqahä’. Since Zakät is a religious obligation with a social and spiritual function, it is incumbent on all individual Muslims as well as its institutional administrators to acquire a thorough knowledge of its fundamental principles and the laws relatincs to its implementation at state level. This book, therefore, should be an essential aid to Muslims in general and Zakät officials in particular. Farishta G. de Zayas, the author, is a Spanish Muslim scholar. She settled in Pakistan in the 1960s. Later she studied Arabic and Islamic Jurisprudence in Damascus, Syria, where this book was written and first published.
