Dr Muhammad Hamidullah was born on February 9, 1908 in Hyderabad, India. Completing his early education in Hyderabad at Darul Uloom Seconday School, Nizam College and Osmania University, where he obtained his Masters and LLB degree, he studied in Europe and obtained a doctorate from Bonn University and later a D.Litt from Sorbonne University, France. Described as a ‘scholar’s scholar’, he was fluent in 22 languages and is credited with around lOOO research papers and more than 160 books on a wide range of subjects in Islamic studies. He lived the major part of his lite in Paris and translated the Qur’an into French. Dr Hamidullah died on December l7, 2002 in Florida, U.S.A.
