GHAZALI AND PRAYERS

Greatest of Muslim thinkers. A jurist and theologian, he is regarded as a pivotal figure in the transition period from classical to Sufistic medieval Islam, which is represented in the Tariqah (the Sufi orders). Ghaza/i and Pr€yer is the first extensive study of Ghazalits theory of prayer (dhikr and du’äh), and demonstrates their significance and application in the daily program of divine offices (wird); it also shows that this mystical program, with its variations, was intended for all Muslims.

Kojiro Nakatnura is Pfofessor of Islamic Studies at Obirin University and Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo. He has authored many books on the history of Islamic thought in Japanese. Ghaza/i on Invocations and Supplications is an English translation of selections taken from Ghazali’s major work, The Revivification of Religious Sciences.
